Kirkby Lonsdale 27 Burnage 5

The weather conditions were foul for the visit of Burnage to Underley Park on Saturday. Their last visit being in Nov 2023, with a 16-49 victory. The torrential rain and strong Southerly wind made playing rugby difficult, and handling skills were tested with the conditions. Kirkby took the lead with a converted try scored by Ben Lawson, after some good inter passing between Oates, and Lawson. This was converted by Ollie Higgs. Kirkby then scored again, after a similar passage of play, with full back Fergus Holden touching down. Higgs narrowly missing this conversion. Burnage inserted some territorial play, and managed a try before half time. Higgs did put over a penalty before half time to make the score 15-5 at the turn around.

The weather didn't let up, and both teams were struggling for any sort of possession and dominance, but Lawson scored again, after breaking through down the left, and touching down, Higgs to convert to put the home side in command. However the bonus point try seemed to be passing us by until Keegan Weichmann, playing his first game for 18 months after a serious knee injury came on to score a late try in the fast approaching darkness!! This was converted for a 27-5 victory and a 5 point victory.

Next week Kirkby travel to Douglas, in the Isle of Man, for their sixth league game. The seconds will be at home to Ellesmere Port, kick off 2.15pm.
