Development XV away at Aspull, Sat 28 Feb
Aspull Development 19–29 Kirkby Lonsdale Development
Kirkby Lonsdale Development made the long trip to Aspull on Saturday with a heavily depleted squad, injuries and unavailability stretching resources across the club. With a side thrown together featuring a mix of experienced heads and new faces, many of whom had never played together, the visitors arrived at a muddy, waterlogged pitch determined to put in a performance.
Kirkby couldn’t have asked for a better opening. An early Aspull knock-on inside their own 22 handed the visitors prime attacking territory. The forwards secured clean ball and began to build through strong, direct carries from Sam Budge, Ryan Mason and Myles Stainton. After sustained pressure near the line, “young” Mike Davis powered over under the posts. Robbie Aiken added the extras for a 0–7 lead. Aspull responded with intent, their powerful ball carriers testing Kirkby’s defensive resolve and making good yardage. The visitors stood firm before turning defence into attack. Nat Bateson made a strong midfield break, well supported by the pack, and quick recycling allowed Harry Wharton to spot space in behind. His clever kick over the top was chased superbly by Jack Birkett, who finished acrobatically in the corner. The game settled into a bruising midfield contest. Adam Wood, Pete Lamb and the returning Jamie Humpage provided excellent support play to generate clean ball, enabling Wharton to move play through the backs. Birkett’s sharp footwork, alongside debutants Jackson and Fletcher, consistently gained valuable metres. A penalty in front of the posts for playing the ball on the floor gave Aiken a straightforward opportunity, which he converted to extend the lead to 0–15. Handling was difficult in the heavy conditions, but another Aspull knock-on gave Kirkby’s forwards a platform deep in opposition territory. Quick thinking from Wharton saw him dive over near the posts, with Aiken converting again to make it 0–22. As the half wore on, relentless Aspull carries began to take their toll. A series of penalties gave the hosts field position and momentum. A quick tap-and-go caught Kirkby off guard, allowing Aspull to cross in the corner, with an excellent conversion reducing the deficit to 7–22 at the break.
The second half started poorly for Kirkby. After an unsuccessful touch kick, Birkett produced a superb tackle, but was adjudged to have deliberately killed the ball and was shown a yellow card. Down to 13 men, and facing a two-man disadvantage, Kirkby were punished as Aspull’s backs exploited the space, scoring in the corner once more. Another fine conversion brought the score to 14–22. With 13 men at one stage and fatigue setting in, Kirkby dug deep. Ibbotson, Lamb and Humpage put in crunching tackles, while Budge, Mason and Wood threw themselves into defensive efforts to protect the lead. Regaining possession, Kirkby struck back. Aiken’s darting break drew a high tackle, resulting in a yellow card for the Aspull scrum-half, perfectly timed as Birkett returned to the field. From the resulting pressure near the line, Davis crashed over under the posts for his second try of the afternoon. The Aspull winger was shown yellow for head contact in the tackle, and Aiken calmly converted to stretch the lead to 14–29. With numbers restored, Aspull mounted a late charge. Strong carries and quick hands created space out wide, and their skipper crossed in the corner to narrow the score to 19–29.
Both sides, exhausted by the draining conditions, continued to trade blows in midfield. In the closing stages, a penalty to Kirkby allowed them to clear their lines and see out the game, securing a hard-earned 19–29 victory.
In testing conditions and with both sides missing key personnel at this stage of the season, it was a credit to both clubs that such a competitive fixture was played. For Kirkby Lonsdale Development, a patched-up squad showed resilience, composure and togetherness to claim an impressive away win. The result maintains their strong momentum heading into the next block of fixtures and keeps Kirkby firmly in third place in the table as they look to continue pushing towards the top. Kirkby now enjoy a week off before returning to home soil for a challenging fixture on Sat 21 March against Liverpool St Helens, kick off 3pm.
