Ladies are GO!
Every weekend across England, women lace up boots, don shoulder pads, tape up legs, chuck in gum shields and run, ruck, tackle, maul and scrum – all in the name of rugby.
It’s one of the country’s fastest-growing female sports, with 30,000 women and girls playing regularly at a club – twice as many as in 2014 – and the trend isn’t just national, as World Rugby has seen a 60 per cent increase in participation globally since 2013, with females now making up a quarter of all players worldwide!
Late in the 2016/17 season there was a plan put together by a few ambitious fore thinking members of KL who were keen to be at the forefront of the women’s rugby movement. We would attempt to recruit and retain, not just a senior women’s squad, but an U18s, U15s, U13s team too.
In less than 4 (playing) months our ladies Captain – Becks Chapman – this morning led out our senior ladies team for their first competitive match against the formidable Upper Eden women’s team!
All of these fantastic women, most who a few months ago had never played rugby before in their lives, have surpassed all our (the coaches) expectations and more than deserve to pull on the club jersey.
