On a very cold Saturday, 1C at best, with the weather shifting from winter blizzards to spring sunshine the lads faced a touring side from St Helens. For most of the first half possession and territory shifted back and forth. The game began to turn 20 minutes in when Kirkby pushed steadily forward with various ball carriers charging down the centre before Bill, playing as scrum half, shifted the ball wide to Alex who passed quickly to Jimmy who ran in the right corner for a try; 5 nil. Kirkby then started to clearly gain the upper hand at the breakdown and consequently dominated possession. The pack once again progressed beyond the 22 metre line when Nick received the ball about 15 metres out and bull dozed his way through with various defenders clinging onto him to score close to the posts, Will converted the try 12 nil. West Park kicked the restart deep into the centre, Bill caught the ball ran forward a few yards before passing to Callum B who passed onto Xavier who from 65 metres out bashed through the defensive line and side stepped the full back to make the score 17 nil. Shortly before half time Callum B received the ball around 65 metres out and broke through to score under the posts, Will converted 24 nil.
Early in the second half Callum B was high tackled 5 metres out from the try line, Bill took the penalty quickly passing to Will who passed to Alex who ran over the try line and then converted his own try, 31 nil. Following a scrum around the half way line Bill picked up the ball and weaved & sprinted his way pass a number of defenders to score a try close to the posts, 36 nil. The lads soon gained another a scrum mid pitch whereupon Will with a quick look to Daniel called a clever set play. Retaining possession from the scrum Bill quickly passed to Will who placed a beautifully weighted kick down the left wing which Daniel caught at full pelt to run in the final try of the match, 41 nil.
It was an impressive performance from the lads, with both the forwards and backs working together to dominate the break down. With a few regular starting players absent some of the lads had to play out of position, particularly impressive was to see prop George demonstrating good pace on the wing and Bill orchestrating good changes of direction as scrum half. All the lads put in a superb shift, Tom, Liam, Jack and George worked hard on breaking the game line with their carries, defensively all worked hard with great contributions from the twins Ryan and Callum, Kelvin, Harry, Alex and Alec.
Many of the lads were in contention for man of the match, but with a consistently strong performance, impressive runs and a superb try from 65 metres out Callum B was chosen as the man of the match. A close contender for man of the match was Will who along with many of the lads had a great game, Will’s weighted kick leading to Daniel’s try was an impressive demonstration of vision and skill.
