Kirkby Lonsdale U16s 42 Kendal 5
Posted at h in U16 ReportsOn a cold (4C) and cloudy day Kirkby had their first match of 2018 against Kendal at home. We last played Kendal away on the 2nd October 2017 winning 24 -19. Following the festive break and with all lads well rested and injury free there were 27 players itching to play. The lads began with a ferocious intensity, which was a pleasure to see as in the past it has often taken a few minutes for the lads to warm into the game. The first try came after 4 minutes when Marcus broke down the right wing and was tackled at Kendal’s 22, the ball was efficiently recycled with a couple of forwards carrying the ball before the ball was whipped out to the left wing for Marcus to cross over in the corner: 5 nil. A few minutes later Alec ran the ball from deep in our half into Kendal’s half on the right wing and at the following breakdown we gained a penalty. A contested cross kick resulted in a line out for Kendal at their 22 which lead to a scrum to Kendal. Kirkby drove Kendal back on their scrum resulting in a loose ball popping out which was seized upon by Lewis who then danced his way around 3 players to score in the right corner: 10 nil. Possession and territory remained with Kirkby. After a few waves of attack and counter attack Kendal had a scrum 5 metres out from their try line, Kendal were driven back in the scrum and had to touch down the ball in their try area resulting in a scrum to Kirkby 5 metres out. As we were driving back this second scrum Tom, playing at 8, scooped up the ball and barged his way over the try line: 15- nil. Early in the second half Kirkby won a scrum around Kendal’s 22 line, Xavier playing at 8 picked up the ball from the scrum and zig zagged his way over to score close to the post: 22- nil. Kirkby maintained the pressure and drove once more into Kendal’s half, Xavier received a pass and weaved 30 metres through the middle of the Kendal pack to score his second try: 27 –nil. Kendal are to be commended for their spirited play as at no stage did they relent in fighting hard at every passage of play and on a number of occasions they managed to drive deep into our half. Picking up the ball around our 22 metre line Sean dodged his way passed a number of Kendal players, running some 50 metres before perfectly off-loading to Callum. Callum had ran a superb line of support, as keeping up with Sean is no easy matter, and upon receiving the ball continued to run at full speed to score under the posts: 32 – nil. The next tag team was a superb combination of Alex & Bill who ran the ball from our 22 passing the ball a couple of times between them with Bill finally scoring under the posts: 37-nil. Kendal then came back more determined than ever to make a mark on the score board, and following a run down the right wing switched the ball to the left wing to score in the left corner, a very well worked team effort try: 37 -5. The last play of the match saw Bill go on a fantastic solo run of some 38 metres to score his second try, making the final score: 42 -5. A wonderful start to 2018, all the lads played well, all upped their game for this match as the contesting at the breakdown was superb as were the lines of support on the attack. A most pleasing aspect was that as the finishers were rotated in to the game at no stage was the momentum lost and the impact of the Kirkby pack remained at a relentlessly high standard throughout the match. Well done lads, the man of the match was the whole team, as it was a wonderful display of team effort.
