Kirkby Lonsdale U16s 39 Keswick 0

Match report for U16s 28 January 2018 Kirkby Lonsdale 39 Keswick 0 Compared to the last few games played in freezing weather the lads faced Keswick at home on a near tropical cloudy day with a sweltering high of 9.5C, but conditions were extremely muddy, it was a very squelchy mud bath festival. We last played Keswick away the previous November, when we won 22 to 5. Today the team were determined to win by a bigger margin whilst conceding no tries, and as the score line reveals it was a case of job well done today. Keswick started the game at an intense pace and during the first 7 minutes Kirkby were mostly defending in their half. The lads then settled into the game and slowly drove Keswick back to the half way mark. Sean did a 40 metres kick and chase, regathered and presented the ball backwards after a tackle close to the try line and Nathan with a quick pick and go scored – 5 Nil. From the restart Kirkby began the next wave of attack leading to Jimmie dong a superb kick and chase, where he twice kicked on a loose ball, gaining 30 metres, regathered to take a tackle and presented the ball on the ground for the next phase of attack. Keswick defending well drove us back to the half way mark, Alec then received the ball and ran from the left wing to the centre off-loading to Sean who then sprinted down the right wing to make the score 10 nil. Kirkby continued to have the upper hand in territory and possession but a loose pass and knock on resulted in a Keswick scrum some 20 metres from the Keswick try line. The lads drove them back in the scrum with the ball popping out and hurriedly taken up by the Keswick scrum half who was then immediately tackled by Xavier resulting in a loose ball on the ground. Nathan kicked the ball forward a few metres over the try line and dove on the ball close to the posts, and with a conversion from Will the score was 17 nil. On the attack again Alex made a break down the right wing handed off a player and out ran another to score under the posts, Will converted 24 nil. Early in the second half Kirkby pushed down the left wing with a clever interplay between Alex, Nathan and finally to Alec who completed the try; 29 Nil. The pressure continued with wave after wave of attack leading to Callum B picking up a loose ball 8 metres out and barging his way through the middle of the opposition to score under the posts 34 nil. The final passage of play saw Keswick driven back and attempting a clearance kick from behind their try line, the sliced kick saw the ball fall 5 metres out in front of the posts. Alex found himself under the falling ball and with clever thinking he tapped the ball backwards into the hands of Nathan who running at pace dove over the line to score his third try of the match. Final score 39 nil. It was a hard fought match, more so than the score line would suggest, and at times in frustration tempers did flare up, but Kirkby kept calm and let their rugby do the talking. After discussion with the coaches and team captain Sean the man of match honour was shared between Bill and Xavier.
